Can Fox News Sway Us To War?

The latest cable ratings have Fox News out on top as I motioned on the main blog. It’s really no surprise. They’ve been on top for as long as I can remember.

What’s concerning is as I watch Fox News there’s a hard push to the right. Hannity interviewing Condi. O’Reilly interviewing Snow. Yes, they’re Bushies. Yes, the interviews are polite because conservatives are being questioned by conservatives. But both Hannity and O’Reilly are clearly prodding the Bushies to the right. More vocal versions of this sort of stuff not too surprisingly dominated Saturday’s 8-12-2006) 2-hour business block. It’s a hard to miss Fox News’ trend. For example, I document some of it here.

This is a lot more than just left versus right talking points of interest only to political junkies. It’s Fox News shilling for a broader war. In my opinion that’s irresponsible and dangerous.

Conservatives sound all so good talking tough about wiping terrorism off the face of the map. But, as a practical matter, is this strategy working in Iraq, the alleged “central front on the war for terrorism”? Will it work with Israel against Hezbollah? Or are we just fomenting more terrorism by using widespread military action to weed out the few? Simply stated, are we hunting for gophers with dynamite and pissing off all our neighbors in the process?
